In the first review of the year, an MTL device has been featured! Specifically, the Voopoo Drag S3 Kit! Of course, this is also from Sourcemore. If you’re looking for an inexpensive, super simple, built-in battery, lightweight pod MTL gadget, then you’ve found it! The 3000mAh built-in battery easily lasts from morning till night. We can increase its power up to a maximum of 60 watts, which is more than enough for all RDL and MTL PnP X atomizers with which the Drag S3 can be operated. The manufacturer designed these atomizers for a lifespan of 100ml, which is easily achievable thanks to the mesh coil. The device itself has an 8-second puff time, after which it stops firing, thus protecting the coil from burning out. In addition, it has overheat protection, overcharge protection, low voltage or over-discharge protection, output overcurrent protection, and short-circuit protection. The body itself is made of zinc alloy and has a leather back.
They released it in 7 colors, all of which I think are beautiful. These colors are White, Pink, Spray Black, Metal Gray, Blue, Green, and Brown. I received the white one, which looks much better in person than in the photo above. Let’s see what the Drag S3 can do.
Voopoo Drag S3 Kit Review
Box Contents and Getting to Know the Device
As usual, the contents are not extensive. We get a USB-C charging cable, a smaller drip tip that makes the feeling more RDL, a 0.6 and 0.8 ohm PnP X atomizer (the 0.6 ohm one will be found in the POD head). And of course, the indispensable user manual and a guide on PnP X atomizers will also be in the box.
The front panel also features the usual things. The fire button, below it the 0.96" TFT display, the navigation buttons, and finally the 5V / 2A charging port, which is so fast that it fully charges the device in about 1 hour. There’s nothing on the back, just a Drag S3 inscription on the leather cover. By the way, I think the pattern on the leather cover is very beautiful.
Let’s stay with the front panel for a moment, as there are a few things worth mentioning. The fire button is a capacitive touch button that unlocks the fire button lock when touched. This is great, but I assume it also has a heat sensor, because in very cold weather, when your thumb is frozen, it only works sometimes, but if your body temperature is adequate, it works properly as it should. Oh, and it works with gloves too, so body heat is definitely the key to our fire button, which is otherwise defined as a touch button. The other thing is the display’s appearance. I’ve never understood why the wattage value needs to be so emphasized that other values are barely readable next to it. The wattage is so large that it covers the entire display. It also shows the mode, which is still readable, but neither the battery percentage, puff time, puff count, nor the ohm value can be read properly unless you zoom in. Of course, for those with good eyesight, this might not be a problem, but I find it distracting. At least I do…
There’s nothing on the sides, I just wanted to show the pattern. By the way, this pattern is only on the white color. Each one is beautiful in its own way.
The base of the device has a rubber coating with pictograms. This adheres somewhat to surfaces, reducing the chance of it tipping over if the table is accidentally bumped. The top of the device only contains the POD head and its connector. It’s held by 4 magnets, but even so, there’s a little wobble, but there’s no need to worry about it; the magnets hold firmly, it just feels like you can slide the POD head from “wall to wall”. I don’t think this is a problem, because it means you don’t have to force the POD head into the recessed connector, but it slides nicely into place. The price for this was that slight fraction of a millimeter that causes it to wobble a bit.
The POD head is, coincidentally, a PnP X Cartridge designed for MTL use. It holds 5ml, has a large filling port, and good airflow. Therefore, it is also suitable for a looser RDL. The included 0.6 ohm PnP X coil is exactly like that, meaning RDL. The drip tip on it has a rubber coating, making it incredibly comfortable for everyday use. This deserves a red dot for Voopoo! At the bottom of the POD head, next to the atomizer, there are 2 notches that help us easily remove it even with a fingernail.
Well, the device itself isn’t too bad, at first glance. It’s beautiful and can be lovable for that reason. The display could have been better so that everything is readable, but as we know, nothing is perfect! Let’s move from the outside in. Let’s look at the menu!
They didn’t overdo this either. We get 5 menu items that can be accessed with 3 quick fire button presses. These are Mode, Theme, Animation, Lock settings, and Puff clear. Going back a bit to the display critique: it’s unphotographable…
The first is the Mode menu item, where we can choose from 3 modes. These are Smart, RBA, and Eco.
By default, Smart is set, which, as we know, adjusts the power to the ohm value. The interesting thing about this is that it defines a maximum power above which we cannot go, but below it, we can set it anywhere, even down to the minimum of 5 watts.
In RBA mode, however, we can set the wattage anywhere; there are no restrictions.
Eco mode, as we already know, draws as little as possible from the battery to conserve it. Therefore, it is not as powerful as the other 2 modes.
The second is the Theme menu item, where we can choose from 3 different themes, which will be reflected on the home screen. The snag here is that I can’t name the themes because they only provided 1 icon each as a name. Did I mention how inexpensive the Drag S3 is? Well, it’s so inexpensive that they don’t have the budget for names. But that’s okay, because that’s not the point anyway.
The third is the Animation menu item, where we can only turn the animation that appears during firing on and off.
The fourth is the Lock settings menu item, where we can choose from 3 locking options. The first is Touch lock, which becomes active when our finger is not on the fire button. This means the device locks itself when not in use.
The second is Button lock, which, when activated, requires two quick presses of the fire button to lock all buttons. It is unlocked with two quick fire button presses as well.
Lastly, we get an Unlock option, which doesn’t lock anything.
The fifth and final one is the Puff clear menu item. We simply press it, and it resets the puff count.
Now that we have thoroughly examined and reviewed the Voopoo Drag S3 Kit, let’s dive into the experience.
ReviewWhile the zinc alloy part of the housing isn’t very large, the edges aren’t covered by the leather wrap. This means that while not immediately, it will take a few weeks or months, but the lacquer and paint can be worn off relatively quickly. The leather cover is quite hard, so there’s nothing but the zinc alloy housing underneath, but it feels good to the touch. I would describe it as warm, meaning it cools down later than the zinc alloy edges. I think this is natural for surfaces like this. The rubber base does grip a bit, which helps it stand firmly and not immediately fall over from a slight nudge.
Since the entire device is quite light, weighing only 155 grams, and partly due to the leather wrap, it’s less fragile. BUT! It is neither shockproof, dustproof, nor waterproof! So, be careful with it! By the way, I mentioned its weight, which corresponds to its dimensions of 124.25 x 28 x 33mm. This means it’s perfectly thick and wide to fit in the hand, and not too tall. So it easily hides in a pocket.
The buttons are very solid, perfectly in place, they don’t rattle or feel loose. The fire button, being touch-sensitive, wakes up the display even when Touch lock is not active, and only when touched, not pressed.
The POD head is very much in order. It fits well, the magnets hold well, although it’s a bit loose, but only because the POD head isn’t snugly fitted into the connector, which I think is forgivable, as it would be harder to insert and remove. The POD head’s charging port is a rubber plug that needs to be pressed firmly to snap into place. But this isn’t a problem, because if it were looser, it might leak, so this can be considered perfect.
Adjusting the airflow is moderately difficult, but this is not a disadvantage either. You need to grip the plastic part of the POD head, and then you can rotate the metal top cap to adjust the airflow. To be honest, this is not a typical MTL device, which the airflow also indicates. It cannot be narrowed down enough to be truly tight, even if only a quarter of a single hole is left open. Therefore, this device is definitely for RDL use! Even if used with the 1 ohm coil.
The display could be better, although I’ve had worse in my hands! The letters and numbers are sharp, but because I think they are too small, it’s hard to read the puff duration, puff count, ohm value, and even the most essential, the battery percentage. If I overlook this, I wouldn’t call it bad. Rather, it’s average and mediocre. But we buy it for the experience and usability anyway, so I think one can live with it, but it bothers me.
As for the menu, it can be considered quite simple. Almost too simple. The 5 menu items of the Drag S3 are simplified as much as possible and only contain the most important things.
Let’s take the modes (Mode) for example.
Smart is for simplicity, because it’s the best for the corresponding atomizers, it really nails the recommended wattage. RBA, because we also get free rein, if someone were to get an aftermarket 510 adapter for it, or because they like their vapor hot. Because no matter how many watts the Smart mode sets for you, the vapor isn’t even slightly warm.
The Eco mode is for saving the battery, for example, if you take it on a long trip, so it’s important that it lasts as long as possible. Although Eco doesn’t have as much boost as Smart, you can get by perfectly well with it. These 3 modes are more than enough for daily use, especially for users who don’t fiddle with the device, they just want to use it.
Although I don’t particularly like any of the themes (Theme) menu items, if I had to choose, the third, i.e., the last design, maybe… But it still bothers me that they couldn’t give names to the themes. Although this isn’t a flaw, it’s more like carelessness or lack of effort. True, the theme doesn’t determine the experience, but I think they could have at least written the background color next to the theme name, because this way it’s just bland.
I’ve always considered animations (Animation) to be unnecessary, especially if they’re bad. Here, they are so mediocre that they’re hardly worth it. I don’t know who they make the animations for, because anyone who uses it certainly isn’t looking at them while vaping. They are probably just filler, because 4 menu items would have looked bad. Anyway, it doesn’t matter, that’s not the point. By the way, the animation sometimes arrives a bit late, so they haven’t tuned it well, which can also be attributed to carelessness.
I have no complaints about the device lock menu item (Lock settings). Everything works as they promise.
The Touch lock activates when your finger doesn’t touch the fire button.
The Button lock engages immediately after 2 quick presses of the fire button and works perfectly. I mean, if it’s locked, it lets you into the menu, but after exiting the menu, all buttons remain locked. So this works perfectly.
BUT IT CAN BE HACKED! Which doesn’t surprise me, because the menu is flawed in many ways anyway! Well: If you go into the menu while locked and press one of the three options, it unlocks the device. Even if you press the same one it’s already on, i.e., Button lock. So, I’m correcting myself now: It works perfectly, right up until you change the device lock. I think it’s a fundamental flaw that it even lets you into the menu. But I guess this is just my opinion, because some people might like it.
I have no complaints about Puff clear. Well, actually, I do… They could at least ask if I really want to delete it, because I might have just stumbled upon it and don’t want to reset the puff count, but I might accidentally do it because it doesn’t ask if I really want to delete it.
What also bothers me is that wherever you exit the menu from, if you re-enter it, it drops you back to the same place. Understand this as: if you exited to the main screen using the Exit option, then after re-entering the menu, you’ll be on Exit again. I think this is also because they rushed it and didn’t care.
My conclusion after all this is that only 2 menu items are worth anything, and those are Mode and Lock settings! Even the latter is only half worthwhile…What a stroke of luck that I can’t find fault with the pod head at least. If I found a flaw in this too, then there would really be no point in spending money on the Drag S3. But the truth is, the pod head itself seals perfectly and excellently. Not a stray bit of condensation, no leaks! It fills quickly and can be filled from bottles with almost any dropper size. But it’s worth noting that if the dropper is too wide, the liquid tends to flow back to where it came from, i.e., towards the neck of the bottle, because the dropper blocks too much path and since it’s also large, we can’t push hard enough for it to exit the bottle quickly enough without spilling. But this is mostly characteristic of old, pharmacy bottles (a memory of good old times). There is no such problem with current bottles with narrower droppers.
The airflow adjustment is simple, just rotate the top cap. However, the little one is very airy. MTL users should consider this if they want such a device, that this is not really MTL, much more RDL. Which is also indicated by the amount of vapor, as you can blow huge clouds of vapor with it. It’s flavorful too!
It perfectly brings out all kinds of flavors. Moreover, it does not intensify sweet liquids. Which is good because the PnP X Platform concentrates maximally on pure flavors.
The 5ml PnP X Cartridge is enough to fill once for a whole day if one can take breaks. For example, if you don’t have it constantly in your hand, or if you have infrequent breaks at work, etc. Because otherwise, it runs out quickly. If you are at home, or have nothing else to do, then it is certainly not enough to fill it once a day. But this is normal somewhere, as all PnP X coils are equipped with a mesh.
I’m about halfway through the manufacturer’s promised 100ml coil lifespan. I report, the flavor is still good and the vapor is abundant. Although the flavor is no longer as intense as in the first 1-3 days, I wouldn’t call it bad at all. It will surely last about as long again. I’m currently at 10 days as I write this, so the PnP X coils are viable for almost a month if used the way I use them. And that looks like I only reduce my momentum at work, because otherwise I would vape all day. Because it’s delicious! So truly intensive use is only characteristic of the afternoon hours, and thus the POD head lasts for one charge per day. I almost forgot to mention that since it’s a mesh coil, I expected it to intensify the nicotine strength as well, since it atomizes more than my RTAs. But it wasn’t like that! In the PnP X Cartridge, all liquids are pleasantly smooth.
I think that’s all for the experience report. Here comes the indispensable pro and con list.
Pros
- Small size and light weight. This is a featherweight player with its 155 grams. Not to mention that its dimensions are also perfect, which are 124.25 x 28 x 33mm. With these parameters, you can own a small and light PODMod set that fits comfortably almost anywhere and doesn’t weigh down your pockets.
- Good magnets. The magnets in the PnP X Cartridge hold well enough not to make its use uncomfortable. Although the pod head is not exactly the same size as the recessed connector, this at least makes it not a struggle to remove and put back in place. I would say the strength of the magnets is good. The pod head doesn’t fall out, but it’s not so strong that you have to pull it apart with great effort. In short: Satisfactory.
- Well-sealing PnP X Cartridge. The pod head seals incredibly well! The rubber plug has to be pushed in firmly after refilling because it is indeed quite snug, but that’s exactly why it’s so good! Both o-rings seal excellently on the coil. Leak and condensation-free!
- Easy to refill the pod head. We get a fairly large filling opening through which we can easily and quickly refill the pod head. If it were smaller, we might struggle with refilling for a while.
- Good flavor reproduction and long lifespan. This is all thanks to the PnP X Platform! After more than 1 week, it still delivers good flavors and the vapor is huge. According to the manufacturer, the coil should last 100ml. I think this will only be the minimum of its actual lifespan! It doesn’t amplify the sweetener in the liquid, and although it has mesh, the nicotine remained as smooth as I am used to from an RTA. The PnP X mesh coil does not intensify the nicotine strength at all, which is good because it is safer! There will be little chance of nicotine overdose!
- Fast battery charging. For me, who vapes all day and leaves it on the table at 25-30% in the evening, it’s very positive that the Drag S3 can be fully charged in or within 1 hour. Therefore, it’s not a problem even if I have to put it on charge in the morning (at dawn) before leaving for work.
- Simple usability and menu. Regardless of the fact that I essentially criticized the menu in the experience report above, I still think its use is simple. They only included the most important menu items. You can’t go wild with this device, there’s no Bypass or TC, which also suggests that it’s an infinitely simple little device, both in its functionality and usability. Everything is clarified and very easily accessible.
- Rubberized drip tip. I think this makes the experience the most comfortable. It not only protects the drip tip from the consequences of falling, but the rubber coating on it is also incredibly soft, which creates a very soft, pleasant feeling.
Cons
- Small font size on the home screen in places. This is a disadvantage for me. But perhaps the more accurate phrasing is that it’s not comfortable. I don’t think the wattage needed to be emphasized so much at all. It would be much more comfortable for the eyes if the font sizes of the values were closer.
- Half of the menu is rushed. I think I explained this thoroughly above, and I still maintain that I think there are only 2 usable menu items, Mode and Lock settings. Although the latter has a loophole, it’s impossible to trigger it while it’s rattling around in a bag, so in any case, we can keep our Drag S3 safe at the bottom of the bag and in our pocket. I’m just saying there are plenty of gaps in the shield. Not to mention the sloppiness that I think characterizes the other menu items. The themes have no names, it doesn’t ask if we are sure when resetting the puff counter, so we can reset it by accident, which we might regret later. Animations are generally unnecessary, but on the Drag S3, they don’t make sense either, because it’s just circles and bubbles…
As a final word, I just want to say that although the Voopoo Drag S3 is not exactly perfect, I think it can be a good basic device, whether for work or for on-the-go use, just grab it and go. The reason why it might work out is to be found in the PnP X Cartridge and the coils. For good flavor, abundant vapor, and outstanding coil lifespan, we have to make a compromise. We have to give up knowledge. This device is not outstanding in terms of functionality, but the PnP X coil brings out the flavors damn well, and the vapor is huge. All of this, of course, in the RDL style! I do not recommend it to those who want a powerful device. I do not recommend it to those who are after quality. I recommend it to those looking for a good-tasting and simple device for cheap, with a stylish design!
