Vandy Vape Pulse 3 Squonk mod review

I’m not coming with something new this time, because some things are eternal. The Pulse series is one of them. Although the Vandy Vape Pulse 3 Squonk mod has been on the market for over a year, it’s a device loved by many and built to last, so I couldn’t resist. It arrived from HealthCabin paired with the DR Pro. The device can deliver a maximum of 95 Watts, and for this power output, the 21700 battery it accepts is a better fit, but of course, it can also be used with an 18650 battery. Its dimensions are 52.5 x 92.5 x 26.2mm, which isn’t the smallest on the market, but despite this, it’s very comfortable to hold. Its weight of 111.83 grams comes from the plastic casing being fitted onto a zinc alloy chassis. The Pulse 3 is a versatile and cool device. Firstly, its magnetic panels are interchangeable in multiple ways. We can print custom panels based on the official blueprints, or buy factory panels to avoid the hassle of printing. We can also buy buttons to make our squonker even more unique. Protections start with the chip and PCB board being waterproof, similar to the Pulse AIO V2, and it also has overcurrent, short-circuit, and overheating protection. Puffs are limited to 10 seconds to prevent burning the coil due to accidental activation. The menu system is extremely simple and, in my opinion, comfortable to use. Since it doesn’t have a conventional user interface, this already makes it interesting.

It is available in 6 colors: black, (frosted) blue, (jelly) yellow, (frosted) transparent black, (frosted) purple, and mint green. I think the frosted versions are the most beautiful, but this time I had to settle for the plain black. Let’s see what I thought of the Vandy Vape Pulse 3 Squonk mod.

Vandy Vape Pulse 3 Squonk mod review

Box Contents and Getting to Know the Device

Minimalist equipment is not unusual for mods, and this is no different for the Pulse 3. The box contains a user manual, a USB-C cable, and a white replacement bottle. And of course, there’s a black bottle already in the device.

On the front, we find the fire button, below it the 0.91" color OLED display, then the plus and minus buttons, and finally the USB-C port. Although it supports battery charging, even fast charging, I still do not recommend charging the battery inside the mod! The front panel is a magnetic panel that can be removed and replaced. Its material is plastic, sufficiently hard, but not indestructible, though it’s a pleasant surprise that it’s scratch-resistant, or at least appears to be so far. The buttons are fixed on the panel but can be easily popped out if someone wants to change the button color.

On the left side, next to the Pulse 3 inscription, is the cutout for the squonk bottle. I think the bottle is seated a bit deep, which isn’t a disadvantage, as it won’t be accidentally pressed. The bottom of the bottle is also easily accessible, making it easy to empty. Although a small amount of liquid remains, considering the design of squonk bottles, it can be considered completely empty. On the right side of the mod, there’s nothing on the panel except the ECG-like symbol on the body, which refers to Pulse and has become the series’ trademark.

There’s nothing particularly interesting when removing the side panels either. On the left side, there’s only the squonk bottle, and next to it, the 21700 battery slot, which can be reduced to 18650 using the included adapter. We insert the battery into the mod with the negative end facing down; if it’s an 18650, it’s also inserted head-down into the adapter, then into the mod. The spring-loaded negative connector on the top is a bit stiff initially, but the more you take the battery out and put it back in, the more it breaks in. On the right side, there’s only a cutout used for easier battery removal and to aid cooling.

The top is flat. Including the side panels, this surface is 26.2mm wide, but the 24mm DR Pro slightly overhangs, though it wasn’t very noticeable due to the side panels. The surface around the 510 connector itself is flush with 22mm RDAs. The width of the hole in the 510 connector is clearly visible; although I didn’t measure it, it appears to be around 1.5mm by eye. Any viscosity or density of liquid can be pumped well and easily, even in colder weather. As you can see, the paint is slightly worn, but this is not characteristic of other surfaces of the Pulse 3; only the DR Pro RDA, which I screwed on a bit aggressively for safety to prevent any leaks, showed this. The 510 itself has excellent spring action and fits perfectly with the RDA’s BF pin. This is evident because when I unscrewed the RDA, nothing else was liquid-covered except for a small amount around the hole, which is completely natural because the RDA BF pin has a slightly wider hole.

Inside the mod is the hollow center pin part onto which we will slide the squonk bottle’s rubber tube when we put it back, as this is how the liquid flows up. We don’t necessarily need to remove the bottle from the housing to fill it; it can be easily filled with anything, as neither the rubber stopper nor the bottle’s placement hinders this. Although Chubby Gorilla bottles aren’t the most convenient for this purpose, they can be filled, won’t spill, and the filling opening is wide enough. The disadvantage of the black bottle is that the liquid isn’t very visible in it, so it’s easy to overfill if you’re not careful enough.

The 7.8ml squonk bottle is designed for easy filling, which it performs perfectly. Filling is very easy, and pumping with it is also very simple and light. Disassembling it for cleaning is also extremely simple; just twist the top or the bottle, and it splits in two, ready for soaking.

As I mentioned, the Pulse 3 has an unconventional user interface. By default, only Watt mode is enabled, so even if you want to change modes, it won’t work the first time until you separately enable TC, Volt, and Bypass, so you can use those modes afterward. I think this is an incredibly good solution because we can disable modes that we wouldn’t use by default. I find this very appealing, and I’ll show you how to enable the modes in the video below.

The very first menu item is Settings, where we can enable/disable the modes presented above. The second menu item is Sleep with which we can actually set the display’s sleep time, which is 10 seconds by default, after which the display turns off. The third menu item is Brightness, which I don’t think needs detailing. The fourth menu item is RST Puff or Reset Puff, meaning here we can zero out the puff counts. The fifth menu item is Replace UI where we can vary the colors of the user interface. In the sixth menu item, we can check the version number. The seventh menu item is RST, i.e., Reset, where we can put the device back to factory default. The last, eighth icon is not a menu item, but the back arrow, with which we can exit to the main screen. I present all of these in the video below.

Honestly, I really liked the Pulse 3, but as is my habit, I will try to find fault with it, which you will read about below.

Experience Report

What amazed me at first was its lightness. In a completely empty state, i.e., without a battery and with an empty squonk bottle, you can barely feel its slight 111.83-gram weight. If we put in a battery, fill the bottle, and put an RDA on it, then it has such perfect weight distribution that it’s a pleasure to hold. Thanks to the rounded edges, it’s very comfortable to grip. The plastic buttons fit perfectly onto the push buttons underneath. Their pressure point is perfect, although their design also contributes to this. The side panels fit perfectly into the cutouts, so they don’t rattle or move at all. Although the side magnets are not very strong, which could lead to problems later because, as we’ve read, they tend to fall out, it can ultimately be remedied with a little superglue. This problem did not occur for me, or perhaps I haven’t used it long enough yet, but it is noticeable that they hold weaker than on other devices. Besides, those magnets are a bit crooked, and the glue underneath them is smeared around the magnets, which clearly shows that this will be the weak point of the device. In contrast, the magnets under the front panel are sufficiently strong, well-positioned, and the glue underneath them is not smeared, so I don’t think the mentioned problem will arise there. The 510 springiness is also worth mentioning, as it is important in that it allows us to attach any RDA, and by this, I mainly mean the 510 threading. The fit of the perforated center contact is perfect. Thanks to which, the liquid also does not leak out, so the seal from this is 100%! The DR Pro sat solidly on it, the threads held it nicely and firmly. The battery compartment connectors, it’s still new to me that they are upside down, but I solemnly promise now that I won’t mention it again, because it seems this will be the trend. The negative top contact is spring-loaded, which is also not very strong, but in this case, it’s not a bad thing, because it would be more difficult to insert the battery with the adapter. Even so, you still have to press it a bit due to the adapter for it to go into place. Therefore, the best solution is to use a 21700 battery with the Pulse 3 from the start, because the battery life will be better anyway, and it tolerates low resistance better. And of course, since it accepts 21700, it can also work with 20700, as both have a height of 700mm. At first, I had concerns that the bottle is right next to the battery, but they quickly disappeared, as refilling the bottle is so easy that not a drop goes to waste, so the battery doesn’t seem to be threatened by this. I have no idea how liquid or anything else could leak under the front panel, but it’s just an extra point that the board is waterproof. Although the manufacturer did not specify whether the device received IP67 certification, they call it waterproof. And I can believe it, because as soon as I removed the front panel, it became visible that the entire board was coated with the same waterproof glue that the Pulse AIO V2 board was coated with. The board sparkles with glue, so we can be sure that this one is also waterproof.

I think the menu is the best part! The user interface itself is not at all conventional, and this includes the menu. Navigation is extremely simple. All menu items are self-explanatory, so labels are not needed, although as soon as we enter one, we can see if we’ve accidentally ended up in the wrong place, but since the interface is interactive, it won’t be common to confuse one menu item with another. And the fact that certain modes can be turned on and off is the best part of it all! TC, Volt, and Bypass are not enabled by default; we can only use the Watt mode first, but honestly, for an average user, there’s no need for anything else. With the Pulse 3, we get the freedom to decide for ourselves whether we need anything besides Watt mode, and this can be very appealing and captivating. In Settings, under the three modes, there are two more options that are enabled by default, so we can only turn them off, turn them gray. These are FIR and ARR. FIR refers to the Fire Button, specifically its locking. Since it’s green by default, it means the fire button lock is not enabled. That is, if we lock the device’s buttons by simultaneously pressing the fire button and the plus button, the navigation buttons will lock, but the fire button will remain active. However, if we turn off FIR, then from that point on, even if the buttons are locked, it won’t let you fire. So, being green means it’s always active. This is also an option that I personally consider good because we can fully adapt the squonk to our habits, which is an awesome thing! The other one, labeled ARR, is Auto Resistance Renewal, meaning whether it measures resistance automatically or not. This is also green by default, and no matter how much I toggled it on and off, my resistance didn’t change. But I suspect it’s enabled by default, so it measures resistance periodically, as that’s normal. I think this is equivalent to a lock resistance function. Since we talked about the button lock, which is possible by simultaneously pressing the fire button and the plus button and holding them for 3 seconds, I’ll also reveal what pressing the fire button and minus button simultaneously does. In a completely incomprehensible way, it flips the display. I don’t know what the point is, but it’s surely useful for someone. The display, as expected, shows data in a different layout than we’re used to. At the top is the puff indicator and the puff count, then below that, we see the Watt value in large white numbers, in the bottom right corner is the Ohm value, the instantaneous voltage drawn from the battery, then the puff duration in seconds, and tenths and hundredths of a second. Since the display background is black, the values are perfectly readable. The display is razor-sharp, although it dims in natural light; outdoors, only the Watt value is readable. I liked the user interface the most, and the comprehensive customization!A squonk mod is useless without an RDA or RSA. As I mentioned, I put the DR Pro RDA on it, which ended up being a dual coil with 0.2 Ohm resistance. It started interacting with me at 50 Watts, and honestly, I was very satisfied with the fire button’s speed and the overall consistency of the output voltage. The Vandy Chip performed well again! I used it with an 18650 battery, but for a build of this caliber, a larger battery would have been more appropriate, so I can only recommend the battery size I used for use with an MTL RDA! The output voltage did not fluctuate at all for a single moment. However, since we’re talking about 50 Watts, towards the end of the battery’s life, when there were only 5-10 puffs left, it was immediately noticeable that the battery was struggling. It barely wanted to power the dual coil, which is understandable since I only have 18650 batteries. For anyone wanting to squonk with a DL RDA on the Pulse 3, a 20700 or 21700 battery is definitely recommended! Despite this, I had no problems with the experience. The usability deserves a five-star rating. I can’t say anything bad about the squonk bottle either. It’s very soft and pleasant to pump. The center pin in the mod, onto which the bottle’s rubber tube is to be attached, perfectly matches the tube, so there is absolutely no sign of leakage. In two words: Everything is perfect!

Now let’s break down the points above.

Pro :white_check_mark:

  • Interactive and customizable user interface. In terms of usability, I think the user interface is the coolest thing about the Pulse 3. It’s nice and colorful, the menu items are clearly separated, it’s simple to use, and since the modes can be turned on/off, we can customize the device 100% to our own needs.
  • Scratch-resistant plastic. In my observation, the plastic casing is scratch-resistant. The device was everywhere the others were, but not a single scratch appeared on it. Whether I put keys next to it or it came into contact with a zipper, nothing shows on the housing. Thus, it proves to be a durable device.
  • Easy-fill squonk bottle. Filling the bottle couldn’t be easier. Although Chubby Gorilla bottles weren’t convenient for filling, it’s still manageable. Besides that, filling the bottle from any smaller bottle is child’s play. Moreover, you can fill it up without a single drop going astray.
  • Replaceable panels and buttons. All magnetic panels and plastic buttons on the device are replaceable, allowing you to make it completely unique. If the factory offerings on the HealthCabin website aren’t enough, you can also print them, as the factory blueprints are available on the manufacturer’s website, and I’ve also linked them here; you can find them in the introduction to the experience report.
  • Comfortable and lightweight body, good weight distribution. Its weight is almost unnoticeable. With the battery, filled bottle, and RDA, the weight distribution is so good it’s almost magical. In addition, it’s extremely comfortable to hold, which will lead to a satisfying user experience.
  • Perfect fit. It’s common for panels to sometimes move or rattle with a firm squeeze. However, the Pulse 3 panels don’t budge; they fit so nicely in place. This small detail significantly enhances the positive user experience. I loved that even though all its panels are replaceable, holding it gave the impression of a solid, one-piece product.
  • Water-resistant design. Although it’s hard to imagine a situation where liquid could seep under the front panel, the manufacturer assured us that even if trouble strikes, we don’t need to worry too much, as the entire board has been given a water-resistant coating.

Con :negative_squared_cross_mark:

  • Unreliable side magnets. The craftsmanship has a slight flaw, as the magnet attachment is rushed. It’s clear from the smeared glue and crooked magnets that this was unfortunately done hastily. This becomes problematic if you don’t have super glue at home or if you lose a magnet. We like quality finishes, but unfortunately, the magnets on the side panels cannot be described as such. Fortunately, this was the only thing we were disappointed with.
  • The 510 area is prone to paint wear. This isn’t a huge problem, but I really wanted to draw attention to the fact that anyone who wants to take really good care of this device should place something under the RDA to prevent scratching. If the paint is chipped even at one point, the wear will accelerate over time and only get worse.

Overall, I really liked the Vandy Vape Pulse 3! The user interface is interactive, simple, and 100% customizable! The weight is fantastic, and so is the weight distribution! The output voltage is always perfect, and the fit of the center pins is flawless! Squonking is good! Squonking is an experience, and the Pulse 3 makes it unique!

I tested this with a Hellvape Dead Rabbit Pro RDA, which I highly recommend alongside the Pulse 3! It could be a perfect pairing! (Of course, only with a 20700 or 21700 battery!)

Thank you for reading! Have a nice day! :hugs:

Jó kis gép szemezek vele a 21700 miatt.
Egyenlőre beérem még a Wotofo profile mod-al.

Viszont 1-0 a Wotofo javára, mert egy hónapja véletlenül leesett takarítás közben. Akku fedél picit pókhálós lett az oldalán de ennyi.

Köszönöm a tesztet tényleg részletes!

Update: inkább 1-1. A Wotofo sajnos csak Watt módban működik.
