Vandy Vape Nova AIO Review

As we are living in the age of Boro AIOs, here’s another device of this type, which came to me courtesy of Sourcemore. And this is the Vandy Vape Nova AIO! What I’d like to quickly mention first is that for a single-battery device, it’s very compact and its dimensions are not bad, which numerically are 45 x 26 x 85mm, naturally, the length includes the drip tip. However, its weight is a bit hefty at 186.7g without the battery. It’s roughly in the same weight class as the Dani. But since it has a zinc alloy and stainless steel housing, perhaps it’s not so surprising that it’s this heavy. The VDP 2.0 Chip provides consistently stable output voltage, bringing out the maximum from even the last puff. It can reach a maximum of 60 Watts, which is not really worth discussing, but it’s fundamental among the characteristics of a good RDL device. And this is undeniably an RDL device! However, we should pay attention when choosing the battery, because the VDP 2.0 Chip can only draw a maximum of 25A from the battery! It handles resistance from 0.2 Ohms up to 3 Ohms, which is just fine, as usual. The protections are also the usual ones, including overheat protection, short circuit protection, overcurrent protection, low voltage protection, and reverse polarity protection. The puff duration limit is 10 seconds, after which the device disables firing if the fire button is held down longer.

This time, it’s a big surprise that the Nova AIO isn’t available in more than 2 color variants. We can only choose between silver and black. Honestly, the decision won’t be as difficult as if they had released it in 10 different colors, so I don’t think this is a major disadvantage. But let’s take a closer look!

Vandy Vape Nova AIO User Experience Review

Box Contents and Getting to Know the Device

We won’t find much in the box, but it’s enough to keep the Nova AIO operational. There’s a bag containing a dedicated Vandy Vape coin for the top nut, spare gaskets, spare screws, and an Allen key. In a separate small box, we find the USB-C charging cable, and we also get a total of 4 AirPins and 3 drip tip airflow tubes. One of each of the latter is pre-installed in the device. The Boro tank with the Nova RBA is already in the device.

There’s nothing special on the front, just a large viewing window, below which is the honeycomb vent, which is almost unnecessary, but I’ll explain why later. Below that is the 0.42" OLED display. On the back, that huge empty space is the battery compartment. It’s almost completely open, so this device requires extra care, but I’ll elaborate on my thoughts regarding this later…

There’s even less on the sides than on the front and back, but the right side does have a small space for the Nova lettering and logo, and the fire button is on the left. Vandy Vape placed the fire button in the most impossible location, I could barely get used to it… I wrote earlier that the front honeycomb vent is almost unnecessary because the sides are completely open, so that extra air hole can only be considered a design element.

The USB-C connector is located on the bottom, capable of charging the battery at 5V/1A. If the charger supports fast charging, the mod can charge the battery at 5V/2A, but as usual, I’d like to emphasize using an external charger! Below that are the navigation buttons, which are slightly recessed, so their presence remains completely unobtrusive and doesn’t affect their use at all. Below that are the manufacturer’s name and the usual pictograms. On the top, behind the drip tip, we find the threaded battery cap. The battery needs to be inserted upside down, as is the case with almost all mods lately. The drip tip is absolutely not in the way during battery replacement.

The DIY design means you can easily remove surfaces that might get liquid underneath, which are considered problematic. On the Nova, these are the button frame and button, as well as the front panel. The button frame is held in place by 4 magnets. The front panel slides into a groove milled into the housing, so two magnets at the top are sufficient. If you remove all of these, the button and display will be flush with the housing, making it easy to keep clean, and you don’t even need to unscrew anything. This is the first thing on the Nova that I personally consider a huge positive! If you don’t like the factory design, there are printable front panel, fire button, and button frame blueprints.

We can remove the Boro in the usual way. First, we pull off the drip tip from the “chimney” on the nut, then turn the device upside down and let the airflow tube fall out. The more dexterous might be able to remove it with a fingernail; I couldn’t. Then, using the coin, we unscrew or loosen it, and then unscrew the nut by hand.

We can release the 6ml capacity tank made of PCTG material by sliding it sideways. To do this, you only need to unscrew the nut halfway, and then the Boro will almost fall out. As you can see, there is only one connector in the device, which in this case is naturally the positive connector. The AirPin located at the bottom of the RBA needs to sit on this to supply power to the coil.

Speaking of AirPins. A total of 4 come with the device from the factory, with internal diameters of 1.5, 2, 3, and 4mm. Of these, the second largest, i.e., the 3mm diameter one, is pre-installed in the RBA. Of course, if we’re talking about airflow control, let’s not forget the drip tip airflow tubes either. The middle one is pre-installed under the drip tip, which I left in, and I only replaced the AirPin with the 2mm one. Unfortunately, the internal diameters of the airflow tubes are unknown. These AirPins are easy to change even on the go, because the RBA is stable enough not to fall apart during replacement, but a thin screwdriver is useful to tighten the AirPin after screwing it in. There is a suitable hole on the bottom of the AirPin where the air flows in.

It was a bit strange at first glance that the Nova Boro can be refilled from two sides, but this is because the Nova Boro is also compatible with the Pulse AIO V2 device. However, the Pulse Boro is not compatible with the Nova device due to the orientation of the filling port. The disassembly mechanism is not complicated. You just need to pull the bottom of the Boro a bit, and it comes out nicely. When reassembling, you need to pay close attention to ensure the small plastic “nub” on the tank goes into its place, which can be seen as a small notch on the bottom of the Boro. Unlike the Pulse RBA, the Nova RBA no longer falls apart at every turn, so this is the second positive point worth mentioning.

Regarding the menu system, there’s absolutely not much to see here. We only get a VW and a VV mode, and we can switch between them by pressing the fire button 3 times quickly; when the mode name and set value start flashing on the display, we press one of the navigation buttons to switch to the other mode, then confirm this with a fire button press. Besides this, 4 quick fire button presses lock the navigation buttons, which isn’t very significant in terms of where the buttons are located, as they are not easily pressed in a bag or pocket. Furthermore, 5 button presses turn the device on and off. It doesn’t do much, but you should never consider the number of menu items, but rather how well it performs what it can do. Now, let’s move on to the assembly.

The Boro’s construction is the same as all the others. The chimney sits inside the tank. Although it’s upside down in the picture, the bottom is at the top, connecting to the bell cap, but only to draw attention to the O-ring on it, because it’s an essential part that needs to be handled with care. Next to it is the dedicated bell cap, which is better to put in place after the RBA. Then comes the Nova RBA, which is exactly the same as the Pulse RBA, only it’s built more robustly compared to that one. Then the bottom of the Boro, into which we either screw the RBA, or push out the ring and then screw the RBA into it. The key is that the ring into which we screw the RBA should not come out or rotate on its own, as was the case with the Pulse AIO V2.

The first build was done on a 2.5mm inner diameter with 7 wraps of Kanthal, wicked with BP Mods cotton. Securing the RBA is beginner-friendly; you just need to place the wire legs under the screw and then secure them with the included Allen screw. Not much else fits into the screw, it’s so thin, so don’t misplace it. Wicking is also very simple; just thread it through and let it hang out long enough to prevent leaks later. Unfortunately, there was too much condensation at this measurement.

For the second build, I made 6 wraps of Kanthal on a 3mm inner diameter and wicked it with Cotton Cloud’s. This picture perfectly shows how much and how recommended it is to let the cotton hang out as long as the bottom of the Boro. This ensures it won’t leak. If we cut it too short, it will unfortunately condense quite a bit and the liquid might leak, but this way the cotton seals everywhere properly. With this inner diameter, there wasn’t much condensation, only a minimal, bearable amount, but I’m sure the 3mm inner diameter also contributed to this.

Here you can see that after cutting the cotton and placing the bell cap, not much of the protruding part is visible due to the wall thickness of the bell cap. Moreover, the bell cap doesn’t compress the cotton so much that it performs well on a 2.5mm inner diameter, so the 3mm inner diameter is definitely the winner for the Nova RBA. As I mentioned above, it’s advisable to put the bell cap back into the tank together with the RBA, as shown in the picture.

As simple as it is, the Vandy Vape Nova AIO could be great, if it weren’t for a few drawbacks which I will explain right away. Here they are:

User Experience Report

The design of the housing and the rounded back make it quite comfortable to hold. The size is also perfectly balanced. Its weight is worth noting, as it can be quite uncomfortable to carry in certain places because it weighs down your pocket. It can also become uncomfortable to hold in hand after a while. The buttons are perfectly placed, they don’t rattle or feel loose. Even the fire button isn’t loose, despite being attached more loosely compared to the navigation buttons. The DIY design itself is, in my opinion, one of the biggest positives of the Nova AIO. It’s great that the device can be maintained so easily. The display and the fire button are designed so that liquid doesn’t easily reach the board, but let’s not get complacent. Although it’s sufficiently sealed, it’s designed this way for a reason, as the direction of flow points towards the fire button, which seems to withstand it well, but in reality, nothing and no one guarantees us this. The front frame and button frame are easy to remove, and after reassembly, the button doesn’t wobble or fall out of place, so I have to say the magnets passed the test.
There was no situation where I managed to accidentally dislodge the fire button from its place, so I would call this bombproof. I think the Boro is in a good position, but what isn’t always in a good position on the Boro is the filling port. When we pull out the rubber plug for filling, it hits the device housing when folded back, but since it needs to be held open for filling, it’s not really possible to hold it in a way that’s comfortable. It’s perhaps even more inconvenient lying flat on a table than holding it in hand. Additionally, only half of the tank’s width is available to keep the filling port open. This isn’t a big problem, you just can’t fill it from a Chubby Gorilla bottle. It’s much easier with a thinner bottle, but even so, I have to say that the space for filling is too small, although not impossible, it was a bit annoying for me and took time for my hand to get used to it. The display is nice and clear, its brightness is not distracting, and all values are perfectly visible. Replacing the battery is extremely easy; the drip tip doesn’t interfere with this at all.

And now for the biggest negative, apart from my slight satisfaction! What I think is a huge disadvantage is the completely open battery compartment! This is good in terms of ample cooling, but this mod is absolutely not for those who occasionally drop their devices, even by accident. I personally consider this a thoughtless move by Vandy Vape! Anyone who can take care of it shouldn’t buy it with complete peace of mind! Especially not those who know their mod could be damaged at any time, whether due to their work, their carelessness, or because a dog or cat could knock it off the table! Only those who can first and foremost assure themselves that nothing will happen, they won’t drop it, the battery won’t get damaged in any way! I can’t understand how they can release something like this! To make matters worse, the position of the fire button is too low, which makes the device top-heavy, which is noticeable in daily use and could thus easily fall out of one’s hand at an unguarded moment! These are the worst solutions I’ve ever seen for a fire button and battery compartment! Moreover, one exacerbates the other’s accident risk! That’s all about this! The rest of the user experience report is written independently of this!

The menu is rudimentary. I don’t have much to write about it, as there are only 2 modes, VW and VV, both of which perform very well. The switching between them is, in my opinion, not tailored for this device, but for another external button device, because the solution where you have to press one of the navigation buttons after 3 quick button presses, and then also confirm it with the fire button, is quite strange to me. This is best done holding it with two hands, for which the entire device is a bit too narrow. Of course, it’s something you can get used to, it’s not that bad, it’s just that it’s not common elsewhere, so it feels strange and takes time to get used to. Nevertheless, both modes work well, and there are no functional issues with them. The output voltage is indeed and noticeably constant, as there are no stray puffs or pops anywhere. It heats up nicely and quite quickly, but not with the intensity comparable to a box mod, as the Nova AIO does not have preheating. Thus, it’s understandable why I feel the heating is cautious, and while this isn’t a negative, it will be noticeable to those who have this as their umpteenth device. However, as I wrote, it’s something you can get used to and it’s not that big of a deal.Építeni és vattázni is pofon egyszerű. Bekaphassuk!

Azért összegezzük a fentieket.

Pró :white_check_mark:

  • DIY design. Sokan próbálkozták már valamilyen szinten kezelhetővé tenni azt a problémát, hogyha véletlen belefolyik akár a gomb alá, akár a kijelzőhöz a liquid akkor az gyorsan és könnyen eltávolítható legyen nehogy nagy galibát okozzon. A Nova AIO esetében ahogy megtörténik a baj már azonnal szét is tudjuk kapni úgy a készüléket, hogy azt teljesen szárazra tudjuk törölni.
  • Fix RBA.
A fapados menü a legegyszerűbb menü.

Kontra :negative_squared_cross_mark:

Ezért inkább bal kézben a legkényelmesebb használni.

:hugs:

Building and wicking are both incredibly simple. I had no issues whatsoever building the Nova RBA. What’s worth paying attention to, however, is folding back the wire legs, as the wall of the bell is quite close, and the coil leg could touch it if you’re not careful. As for the wicking, let it hang out as much as possible, as this is how it best seals the juice channels to prevent leaks. On the other hand, I do have complaints about the design! The threading of the RBA is also the 510 connector, which made me look at the accessories list a bit strangely, as it’s listed that the 510 adapter is an accessory, when in fact, this is not an accessory. This is the RBA itself, whose threading is the same as any tank’s, so we can easily screw it onto a mod to build it there. If only it were that simple! The end of the AirPin, or where it connects to the positive connector on the device, is too thick, which is why it cannot be screwed into every mod. Of course, this will only be a problem for those who this would be their first device, or who have a mod with a 510 connector that is too small or not springy enough, because we won’t be able to screw the Nova RBA into those. They included an adapter for the Pulse AIO V2, and as long as I only read the back of the box, which states “510 adapter,” I was expecting some kind of adapter like the one for the aforementioned device, but there isn’t one for the Nova AIO! Damn it! If the Nova AIO is your first device, where will you screw it on, in your hand? I wouldn’t recommend that for beginners. So, there are now 3 terrible blunders from Vandy Vape, which made me seriously doubt my recommendation!

From this point on, it becomes secondary that it doesn’t produce a bad flavor. The flavor reproduction is quite pleasant, although it doesn’t stand out from the crowd, but I have no specific complaints about it. There’s plenty of vapor too. Perhaps condensation is what spoils the overall picture. It condenses immensely on a 2.5mm inner diameter coil, and it’s not too bad on a 3mm one, but since the Boro is completely open on both sides, if there’s a larger drop of condensation in it, it can easily leak out onto the side of the mod. And if we’re not paying attention, because such a situation can go unnoticed, we’ll smear everything, including the battery, if the Nova AIO is constantly in our hands. Anyway, since the device is open everywhere it shouldn’t be, it doesn’t take long for condensation or liquid to get into the battery. I only managed to smear the button, which isn’t a big deal because it can be removed, and wiped clean underneath, but if I consider how easy it is to get messy with this, then the battery is at risk again, and not just from drops. Since liquid is also an electrical conductor, being a fluid, it can cause huge problems at any time if it leaks into the battery!

There are a few positives, but for the most part, I am disappointed now. More than I should have been! These are such major mistakes that a whole herd of cattle would come out of them! Let’s summarize the above.

Pros :white_check_mark:

  • DIY Design. Many have tried to make it somewhat manageable to deal with the problem of liquid accidentally leaking under the button or to the display, so that it can be quickly and easily removed to avoid major trouble. In the case of the Nova AIO, as soon as a problem occurs, we can immediately take the device apart to wipe it completely dry.
  • Fixed RBA. I approached building the Nova RBA with some trepidation, as the Pulse RBA on the previous Vandy Vape AIO was not a very stable piece of equipment. It would slip apart, fall apart, or rotate in the tank after assembly. Fortunately, the manufacturer managed to fix this problem, thanks to which I had no issues with the RBA.
  • Easy to Coil and Wick. The building style is as beginner-friendly as possible, making the Nova RBA recommended even for beginner builders. But only the RBA, or rather the Boro. Wicking is even simpler than building. Just pull it through and cut it at the edges of the Boro base, and you’re done. After a few builds, you can even do it with your eyes closed and upside down.
  • Simple Operation. The stripped-down menu is the simplest menu. There’s not much to write about it, because it’s simply that simple. While remembering button combinations isn’t a big deal, the placement of the buttons is designed so that you won’t need to worry about button locks.

Cons :negative_squared_cross_mark:

  • Fire Button in the Wrong Place. They put that huge fire button in such an impossible place that it’s not always easy to reach. Therefore, it’s most comfortable to use in the left hand. Of course, you can get used to it, but for me, it was quite difficult, and even now, I sometimes can’t grip it properly with my right hand without having to switch to my left hand because it’s only comfortable that way. So, this is somewhat problematic, which is compounded by the fact that it’s too low, making it top-heavy, which is not friendly to an open battery compartment.
  • Completely Open Battery Compartment. After the fire button, the manufacturer couldn’t have made a bigger mistake! This is a potential source of danger for the user! If someone still buys it, I 100% wouldn’t take this mod out on the street in their place! But trouble can happen at home too, so this is a flawed design as it is!
  • Relatively Heavy. That 186.7 grams is quite a lot. With a battery, its weight will be well over 200 grams, which really weighs down pockets. While it’s not that terrible, considering the aforementioned failure factors, it’s already a huge problem! The manufacturer has piled mistake upon mistake with this!
  • Uncomfortable to Refill. The space is small, which makes even folding back the rubber plug an obstacle. The frame of the housing is constantly in the way during refilling, and it’s very difficult to fill from a Chubby Gorilla bottle, so those who use longfills might have trouble refilling. Refilling from other, narrower or smaller bottles causes fewer problems, but it’s still not as smooth.
  • 510 Connector RBA. If we pull the RBA out of the bottom of the Boro, we just need to screw it onto a mod and we can re-coil it. However, this will be quite difficult because the RBA cannot be screwed onto mods with too low or too small 510 connectors because the protruding bottom part of the AirPin is too thick. Therefore, we cannot put it on any mod (definitely not on a Dani), and whether it’s compatible with our own mod, meaning whether we can screw it on, we can only find out after purchasing. Two words: It’s a gamble. Oh wait, that’s three words…

Finally, I must reiterate how disappointed I am with Vandy Vape this time! To mess something up like this! The worst part about it all is that the Nova AIO has such a practical solution that it’s a huge shame because of the other flaws! And that’s the DIY design! Of course, this isn’t meant literally, but there’s a blueprint to print your own front panel, button, and button frame out of plastic, and it’s extremely useful that these can be removed with a simple motion. But even this practicality cannot be enjoyed because the Vandy Vape Nova AIO is fundamentally flawed in its construction! It will not receive my recommendation this time! I’m sorry!

Thank you for reading! Have a nice day! :hugs:

:hugs:

Hát igen, ez most elvérzett nálam elég rendesen.
