This time, the latest Tauren RDA Vortex 30! arrived directly from ThunderHead Creations. This brilliantly crafted RDA features 3D vortex airflow, an upper air intake system with a total of 84 holes, ensuring coil cooling from 2 sides. The air passes first under and between the coil, and secondly, it is directed precisely onto the coil from the sides through the holes. The 3D vortex airflow has a noticeable, but not excessive, air resistance, which allows the air to flow pleasantly smoothly regardless of how open it is. Regarding the RDA’s dimensions, it’s just right at 30 x 29.5mm. Its 150g weight indicates quality material usage. It has a dual coil postless deck and a 2.5ml liquid capacity, ensuring you don’t run out of liquid for the cotton quickly.
The Vortex 30, made of SS, is available in 6 colors: gold, silver-black, purple, matte black, SS, and gunmetal. The purple one arrived to me, which is actually a bit darker in person than in my pictures. Now, let’s take a closer look.
THC Tauren RDA Vortex 30 Experience Report
Box Contents and Getting Acquainted with the RDA
The box contents are perfectly adequate and sufficient. There’s a set of spare o-rings, 8 spare grub screws (4 hex and 4 flat head), and 2 Tri-Core Fused Clapton coils to get you started. Additionally, the manufacturer included two types of hex screwdrivers: one for the grub screws (1.5mm) and another for the center pin, as this can be replaced with a BF Pin, which is also part of the accessories. Of course, we also get a coil jig, which indicates that cutting the legs to 6mm will position the coil precisely opposite the airflow. Finally, there’s a user manual and a warranty card.
The 30mm diameter RDA itself doesn’t consist of many parts: just the postless deck, the top cap (which includes the inner chamber, theoretically removable but it wouldn’t come out before first use), and on top of all this, an 810 drip tip.
The Vortex 30’s postless deck has a deep enough cotton well to hold 2.5ml of liquid. To secure the coil, we approach the screws from the outside, near the airflow. The coils appear to be quite close to each other, but once secured, they don’t seem so close; rather, the deck is wide enough to allow variation in the inner diameter of the coils.
The 3D vortex airflow is contributed not only by the 84 holes on the top cap but also by the side grooves on the deck. These grooved parts need to be seated into the inner chamber located in the top cap.
Due to the complex design and simplicity, we’re already at the building stage! As it’s my habit never to use the coils included in the package, I decided to install MTL Clapton coils with a resistance of 0.7 Ohm per coil and a 3mm inner diameter, featuring 7 wraps. In my opinion, coils with a 3.5-4mm inner diameter would also fit easily. Since I no longer prefer hard DL (Direct Lung), I managed to create a really punchy RDL setup. Securing the coils is extremely simple, especially if you cut the coil legs to the 6mm recommended by THC. This setup still fits, so it’s only worth putting in larger coils or those with more wraps; smaller ones won’t reach the grub screws.

Wicking is no harder than securing the coils. However, with such small coils, the grooved airflow section on the deck can get in the way during cotton insertion, so you should aim for longer coils, which can be achieved by having wider wraps. Returning to wicking, the longer the better, to properly fill the cotton well. You just need to pay attention to fluffing it so it spreads nicely at the bottom of the deep and wide well, ensuring good juice flow. I used Vapefly Cotton Cloud’s, which performed well, but it could noticeably handle denser cotton.
I really liked the design and construction! It looks like a solid, everlasting piece. Moreover, there are many possibilities hidden within this RDA that are definitely worth exploring a bit. Now, let’s look at it in a bit more detail. Here we go:
Experience Report
Thanks to its design, the Vortex 30 has become very simple yet strikingly unique due to the 3D vortex airflow. Despite its wide form, it doesn’t seem that huge to me. The top cap is easily removable, and although the o-rings grip quite firmly, it’s still easy to take off. The drip tip is very comfortable, and although short, it doesn’t get hot at all. In fact, the top cap itself didn’t get hot for me, even after chain vaping, which is a hallmark of perfect cooling. The o-rings on the side of the deck grip well not only when removing the top cap but also when adjusting the airflow, making it easy to turn yet always keeping the top cap firmly in place once the optimal airflow is set. The grub screws hold perfectly, capable of securely fixing any thick wire. When replacing the center pin, be careful not to let one half of the postless deck fall out, as the pin holds it in place. When reattaching the top cap, pay attention to the design of the inner chamber, as its deeper groove is meant for the grooved protruding part on the deck. The 150 grams the Vortex 30 weighs isn’t light on its own, but since it’s quite short (29.5mm), it doesn’t make the mod top-heavy. Since this isn’t an overly complicated RDA, which makes it totally lovable, its functionality would have been just this. Alright, let’s move on! There’s nothing more to see here…Regarding the experience, I think it performs brilliantly! The 2.5ml capacity helps prevent dry hits and allows the wick to last for more puffs than usual. For this, the wick must be run all the way to the bottom of the channel, so don’t skimp on that for the Vortex 30. Building is simple, of course, this requires using thick Clapton wire and adhering to the manufacturer’s recommended 6mm leg length. 6mm is definitely recommended, as this places the coil precisely in the path of the airflow, making it perfect. I used a 3mm inner diameter, but at first glance, it’s clear that with similarly thin MTL Clapton wire, like what I used, a 3.5-4mm inner diameter can also fit. However, in my opinion, a 3mm inner diameter is perfect, you just need something more substantial like Clapton wire, especially if the goal is hard-hitting DL, but of course, it also holds its own perfectly for RDL use. With the MTL Clapton I used, I achieved an RDL experience that, with semi-open airflow, became a flawless, light DL. And the 3D vortex airflow system is simply lovable! The 84 holes and the grooves on the deck make the airflow and flavor as silky smooth as I like it! Simply perfect! I also consider it important to note that since the air doesn’t specifically whistle through it, but there is noticeable air resistance, there’s also some TH! Of course, not too much, it won’t burn our throats, but it’s absolutely noticeable, which finally makes the experience powerful, not just rich in flavor. This is a big deal because not all DL RDAs are capable of this! Condensation is absolutely not typical, at most within the deck, but ultimately that’s exactly where it belongs. While the flavor depends on the setup and the Wattage, I can say that my setup described above at 45 Watts delivered perfect flavors in the Vortex 30. And the vapor production is amazing! After all, it’s a dual-coil DL.
Finally, I have to write that although I no longer prefer DL as much as a few years ago, with the Vortex 30, thanks to the 3D vortex airflow system, I received an experience that allowed me to get the absolute most out of my RDL setup. Every puff became fantastic with truly pleasant airflow and TH! From my side, the THC Tauren RDA Vortex 30 is a recommended product for all RDL and DL fans who enjoy squonking. Because using this RDA with a squonk mod will be a real experience!
