I recently received an RDA from Sourcemore that I think looks quite exciting, manufactured by Hellvape, renowned for its great flavor and dense clouds. This is the Dead Rabbit 4 RDA! It’s a rather small RDA, measuring only 32.8 x 24mm. Without the drip tip, it’s just 22.5mm tall. It weighs 43g, which is considered heavy, as it’s made entirely of stainless steel, but somehow it doesn’t feel that heavy; perhaps it only seems so due to the solid deck. However, if I write more about it, there won’t be much left for the review, so let’s look at the color options.
These colors might look familiar, as Hellvape’s rebuildable products usually come in these colors. These are blue, SS, rainbow, full matte black (which is black even where the regular matte black isn’t colored), matte black, gunmetal, and gold. I received the SS version. I don’t promise a long review, but let’s dive in!
Hellvape Dead Rabbit 4 RDA Review
Box Contents and Getting Acquainted with the RDA
In the box, we first see the RDA, the Ag+ resin drip tip, and a single coil adapter. If we take out the small box, we’ll find a BF pin, an 810-510 drip tip adapter, 3 types of screwdrivers (2 of which are hex), spare hex grub screws (the deck has regular screws), spare o-rings, 2 strips of shoelace cotton, 2x 0.37 ohm Ni80 Fused Clapton Coils, and a coil trimmer to cut the coil legs to size. If we unpack everything from the box, a user manual is also located at the very bottom. So, we get quite a lot for this tiny RDA.
The construction is simple and clever. There’s the deck with the honeycomb air inlets, onto which we slide the inner AFC Cap, whose holes align with the honeycomb air holes. Then, we screw on the outer AFC Cap with a half turn, which has only two slots with rounded edges, allowing us to close off the air holes individually. Finally, the drip tip is attached.
The deck can be used for dual or single coils, with the help of the single coil adapter shown to the right. To install it, we need to unscrew a screw on one side, then place the adapter on the deck so that its small nub can be secured with the screw. This covers 2 binding posts and also takes up a bit of space to narrow the deck, leaving room for only 1 coil.
The outer AFC Cap is held only by the O-rings, so you just slide it on. However, since the honeycomb air inlets are quite large, each has a notch where it can fit. It won’t go in otherwise.
Although the picture doesn’t show it very well, it might be noticeable that there’s quite a bit of space above the coils. If the top of the inner AFC Cap were lower, the vapor would be warmer, even hot, and the metal caps would also overheat. This is why space is needed for air circulation, which serves for cooling.
There are two types of drip tips included. The one pre-installed is made of metal, making cooling even more important, as the metal parts, including the drip tip, heat up very quickly. The other drip tip is an Ag+ marked resin drip tip, which is antibacterial, meaning bacteria won’t settle on it.
Sounds promising so far? Let’s see if it’s worth it!
Review
It’s hardly worth discussing its size. It’s small, a bit heavy, which is actually good. It would be a negative if it were light, as light parts somehow always fall out of one’s hand more easily. The material is high-quality stainless steel, about which the manufacturer provided no further details. Assembly is extremely easy. Everything fits together precisely, with no wobbling anywhere. The screws hold perfectly. The single coil adapter also holds very well. When it’s in the deck, there’s about a 1mm gap underneath where the liquid can travel in BF mode. I think its design is clever precisely because if you’re not using the RDA in BF mode, just dripping, you only need to unscrew the outer AFC Cap to drip onto the cotton. This way, everything doesn’t get messy with liquid, as the inner AFC Cap catches the liquid, preventing leaks. Plus, the airflow is high enough that you won’t get messy.
It’s quite airy. Although it can be restricted for an RDL feeling, it won’t be MTL, so the 510 adapter isn’t in the package for that reason. Which is not a bad thing, as neither its characteristics nor its construction are meant for it. It can only move between airy RDL and hard DL. Building is simple because it has a postless deck, which are always simple. However, thin wire is not suitable for this; a simple Clapton is the minimum. Not just any cotton works well either; Cotton Bacon, Kendo, and similar are better choices. The key is that it can hold liquid well at high wattage and avoid dry hits. The coil trimmer indicates that 5mm is the ideal length for the coil leg, placing the coil at the airflow. If using two coils, a 2x2.5mm inner diameter is good for airflow to pass through, and for single coil, 3-3.5mm is ideal. The cotton should not be over-stuffed, just spread nicely in the wick channel. For single coil, a 3.5mm inner diameter is best, with enough cotton to fill the space well. This will provide an ideal experience. But with fluffy cottons, like Cotton Bacon, be careful to spread it gently!
The flavor and vapor are unquestionable, as it’s a Hellvape product. So, they are No. 1 for both! Although for me, it’s so airy that I had a very hard time breathing afterwards. But this can be explained by the fact that being an MTL vaper, I no longer prefer DL gear. Nevertheless, hopefully, this will be enough for you to know if the Hellvape Dead Rabbit 4 RDA is made for you!
