Hellvape Fat Rabbit Solo 2 RTA Review

With this review, I hope to please the DL vapers once again! Our subject for today arrived from Sourcemore and it is none other than the Hellvape Fat Rabbit Solo 2 RTA! It was a pleasure to test it, because although I am an MTL partisan, that’s precisely why I look at DL tanks with a critical eye. If it passes the test with me, it will perform even better for you, because you can bring out the maximum from it! Just like any other Hellvape product, certain parts of the internet sing its praises, and it’s absolutely understandable why. After reading/hearing what can be read/heard about this tank, I became even more curious about it. Hellvape products are very simple, their construction is not complicated at all, and they are extremely user-friendly, just like the FR Solo 2! Although it looks quite bulky, that’s just the exterior, as it was originally designed for a single coil, and for that, the 25mm diameter is a bit wide, but since it can accommodate even two coils, there was a need for plenty of material, which is not lacking, yet it cannot be called heavy. It strongly reinforces the mid-range, the upper segment of it, and what it can offer, it does very well, as is generally characteristic of Hellvape products!

The appearance itself is not too flashy, but due to its size, it is quite eye-catching. It is available in seven colors: full matte black (the logo is also colored on this one), SS, blue, gold, gunmetal, matte black, and rainbow. I (of course) received the SS. Well, let’s take a closer look!

Hellvape Fat Rabbit Solo 2 RTA Review

Box Contents and Getting to Know the Tank

The FR Solo 2 comes with the usual accessories. There are two small bags in the box; one contains a bunch of spare gaskets, spare screws, and a flathead screwdriver. The other bag contains an Ni80 Clapton coil wrapped around a 3mm inner diameter core, and a shoelace-style cotton strip that matches the coil’s diameter. Of course, you’ll also find a 5ml bubble glass in the box. Furthermore, the manufacturer has included a coil-sizing tool, which I am personally very happy about, as the tank has a postless deck, so it matters how long we cut the coil legs. But fortunately, this has also been marked, as Hellvape has indicated on the coil sizing tool, ranging from 4-8mm, that 5mm is the ideal length. Naturally, you’ll also find the indispensable user manual at the bottom of the box.

The first thing that catches our eye in the box is the spare glass, with which we can increase the e-liquid capacity from 3ml to 5ml. The larger volume will be needed, as I think it consumes quite a lot. For now, I haven’t installed the factory-provided coil, although I can say that I never do, but I dare say it would consume even more with that one.

We have now arrived at the RTA’s components. As we can see, it’s a fairly simple tank. The first part is the top cap, which has an 810 resin drip tip, but the inner diameter is narrowed to 510, as the tank’s name implies it accepts a single coil, so everything is aligned for that, except for the airflow, but we’ll get to that later. Let’s move on. The second component is the airflow control ring, but there’s nothing to see here, so let’s move on to the third component, which is the 3-in-1 Chamber. This turned out quite interestingly, as Hellvape’s smart minds have finally figured out that if the filling port slopes slightly inwards, we won’t be swimming in e-liquid after many refills, so for me, this is the second positive point after the coil sizing tool. The Chamber itself functions as usual, meaning it’s a chimney, airflow, and filling port all in one. This is followed by the 3ml glass, whose sibling I showed above. Finally, the FR Solo 2’s postless deck concludes the lineup, on which we can also see an airflow opening.

The 25mm diameter deck, although designed for a single coil with a maximum inner diameter of 4mm, can accommodate 2 coils with a 2.5mm inner diameter according to the manufacturer. It can also breathe from below, not just from above, which becomes truly advantageous when operating 2 coils. The cotton is wicked down from the side, all the way to the bottom of the deck, similar to the DR Solo. In essence, that’s about all there is to know and worth knowing about the deck. In this case, its greatness lies in its simplicity!

What is definitely worth writing about is the inside of the Chamber. The left picture perfectly shows the junction point between the deck and the Chamber, based on which we can already conclude that it’s really not worth cutting coil legs longer than 5mm, because they will touch the top of the Chamber, and then the short circuit menace will come and get you! The right picture shows the outlet for the top airflow, which takes the form of the well-known honeycomb style. The bottom airflow system in the deck is also honeycomb style, which softens both the flavors and the vapor.

Let’s Build It!

I stayed true to the tank’s name, meaning it got a solo build, specifically a 6-wrap Ni80 Coilogy Clapton, 26/36 gauge, wrapped around a 3mm inner diameter core. For cotton, I chose 3mm diameter Vapefly Cotton Clouds, so I didn’t have to thin it out. Hooray for laziness… Building this tank is straightforward, not complicated, but you should pay attention to the wicking, as it’s not enough to cut the cotton strip at the edge of the deck; you need to leave it a bit longer so it can reach the bottom of the deck later. Fluffing it is almost mandatory, as the wicking process compresses the cotton a bit. Although I’ve noticed that denser cotton fits better here, the Cotton Clouds worked excellently. I was a bit worried it might be too little, but the 3mm fits perfectly into the wicking channel. However, if someone wants to use it with a dual coil build, they should definitely use Cotton Clouds or similar loose cotton, because the combined diameter of the two coils will be 5mm, and thus the cotton’s too, so you need to pay attention to the details there, as it will get compressed in the wicking channel.

Looks promising so far, right? Let’s dive even deeper! Next up is the:

Review

:hugs:
I have absolutely no complaints about the assembly quality! The threading on all parts is perfect, and sticking is not an issue at all. The top cap has a bayonet lock, which shortens the refilling time. Moreover, you don’t have to turn it a quarter turn, but a third of a turn, which makes it quite stable and it won’t just unscrew. (Of course, the third turn is relative to the circumference of the top cap.) The drip tip does get a bit slippery and starts to wobble slightly when there’s some liquid condensation underneath, but it’s not bothersome, and fortunately, it doesn’t slip out of place. However, replacing it will be difficult because its inner diameter is 510 (more precisely, about half a millimeter smaller than the actual 510 size), not 810. This means it’s matched to the chimney, so even if we put on a drip tip with a wider inner diameter, it won’t allow more air through. That’s why it’s fortunate that the drip tip is comfortable enough that we don’t even think about replacing it. The airflow control rings move smoothly; you don’t need extra effort to adjust the airflow, but I would still call them firm, so they won’t twist open in your pocket. Yet, they are still easy enough to turn. As we’ve come to expect, the seals will grip them tighter in the first few days, but they will break in over time. In my experience, this is characteristic of all Hellvape products, but I wouldn’t call it a problem; rather, I’d call it a symbol of durability. The filling port, as I mentioned, slopes slightly inward, which is perhaps the tank’s biggest positive. Because of this, even though the aforementioned openings are a bit lower, the liquid doesn’t pool on the edge of the tank when we screw the top cap back on. The other big positive is the coil jig. Not everyone has one, so it’s commendable that Hellvape included this plastic tool in the box; it’s a huge help!

As for the experience, it’s very flavorful, very cloudy! But alongside that, it’s also very airy. While the latter isn’t a significant problem, as the airflow can be restricted, it’s worth noting that there’s a lot of air in the FR Solo 2. This is precisely why I mentioned at the beginning that you (DL users) will surely be able to get the most out of it, because for me, this tank has too much airflow. But this isn’t a complaint, as we’re talking about a DL tank. It delivers flavors very well; perhaps the liquids even taste a bit sweeter from the FR Solo 2, but I attributed this to the thick wire and the 40 Watts I used to power my 0.6 ohm build. Building is simple, almost too simple, so there shouldn’t be any issues with that, especially since we get a coil jig as a guide. Wicking isn’t complicated either, although, as I wrote above, the unwritten rule that you should cut the cotton ends at the edge of the deck doesn’t apply to this tank. If you do that, it won’t be long enough to reach the bottom of the deck. However, in the FR Solo 2, it must reach the bottom of the deck, partly because this is the only way to properly empty the tank, which is important not only when rewicking but also when you want to vape a new flavor after the current one. On the other hand, the cotton in the wicking channels cannot be too tight, otherwise, the risk of dry hits may arise. And since it’s not worth overstuffing with cotton, loose wicking, or pushing loose cotton back, can lead to the liquid flooding the channels, causing gurgling. Therefore, it’s definitely worth letting the cotton reach the bottom. I also mentioned above that cotton slightly denser than Cotton Cloud’s fits better here, because I think the liquid can still push it back easily, although it didn’t happen because I let it reach the bottom of the deck. Still, despite all this, a BP Mods might be a better choice, for example.

To cause some dilemma, I perceived a slight difference in experience between the bottom and top airflow systems. Individually, both airflow settings provide soft flavor and silky vapor; there are no issues with this. There’s no difference in flavor either, as everything tastes equally good regardless of which airflow setting we use. However, I preferred the top airflow because the vapor was warmer through the bottom airflow, which personally bothers me, and that’s what happened here. If I opened both, I got only a lukewarm result, which wasn’t as bothersome, in fact, it was quite pleasant. But that’s why I used the top airflow more, because I got a distinctly cold vapor there, just how I like it. Speaking of airflow, everyone will obviously need to calibrate this to their Wattage. But since at least 40 Watts are needed for a 0.6 Ohm build, plenty of air will be required if the wire is thicker or if someone uses a dual coil setup. So, it’s not really a problem that there’s so much air in the FR Solo 2, because it’s better to have it than not.

Finally, I must say that it delivered an absolutely satisfactory DL experience for me! Although it has a lot of air, this is not a disadvantage, because a true DL vaper will be able to utilize it! It’s easy and simple to build, wicking requires a little attention, but it’s not complicated either, and you don’t need to resort to various wicking tricks. Just make sure the cotton isn’t too compressed in the wicking channels and reaches the bottom of the deck! So, I must say that the Hellvape Fat Rabbit Solo 2 RTA is a very solid DL tank, with good material quality, simple usage, and last but not least, it delivers flavors well and has abundant vapor production! Moreover, it can cover all usage modes from restricted DL to truly airy DL. If you are a DL user, it’s not to be missed!

Thank you for reading! Have a nice day! :hugs:

Since jamming was already mentioned in the report, is there any practical tip for the RTA prone to it, so that this can be avoided?

Yes, there is. I lubricate the rubber rings with a little VG or PG before assembly or use.
This prevents jamming.

It worked perfectly… During the previous wicking, I took out the bottom rubber ring and dipped it into the Liquid.. I took it apart today and there was no binding/sticking

 Thank you

Dear Kinga,

Thank you very much for the article!

It helped me choose and set up my first rebuildable tank.

It produces very nice flavors  and a lot of vapor. I found the best setting for me with single coil, 3mm core, 24 GA, 6 wraps, at 25 W, with bottom airflow.

Thanks again :hugs:.

Perfect, useful description. The price isn’t bad either. I’m thinking about it, but I’ve been using the first version for two years and I find that one excellent too. I just need a bubble wrap cover for it, because I successfully broke it.
