Another scare

12th District, Budapest, Királyhágó Street… that’s where I spent my childhood and later my teenage years.

I lived in a four-story building. Below us on the third floor was a Japanese advertising agency, set up for gift and commercial photography. They used product samples that, after the shoot, ended up in the trash.

Shame or not, at 13 or 14 years old, I would rummage through the bins, sneaking around to get my hands on the “opium of the decaying West.” To my credit, it was 1977-78, and back then, all we had was Sopianae (8 Forints) and Amo soap… The Atlantic cigarettes hiding at the bottom of the bins would scent my t-shirts for years after I found them unopened.

Catalogs, perfumes, chocolates, tobacco products, etc… I was poisoned by the scent of Multifilter…

Later, only the ‘100s’, the American ones, could replicate that aroma… I got hooked on them, and well, that lasted for years.

Because as an anxious teenager, I wasn’t just trying to impress myself; I was also aiming to please the crowd by exhaling that smoke. I was shy, but I wanted to conquer…

Among the perfumes, there were about 20–25 trial vials (2-3 ml) of Givenchy Gentlemen Original. I bagged them all, and even 50 years later, thanks to the world wide web, I still order only this fragrance from the original French manufacturer…

We are all branded in one way or another…

Me too, but we still spent 40 years together  And we were truly good friends.
Anyway, it was also very surprising to me when I realized, my god, I season my food so much, I can smell odors, there’s no smoke smell in the apartment, my clothes smell nice, etc… Nowadays, I get annoyed when the dreadlocked guy on the ground floor opens his door, because the never or rarely ventilated, smoke-filled air drifts up…

Or Porti is on sale at the grocery store  Only 2.50 a pack

The “dark” side, it was indeed missing…

my apologies.

…and there were even “worse” ones!
Lishi Pai and co.?

I know the feeling… I wouldn’t want to smell what that dreadlocked guy is airing out either…
My dad was an alcoholic and, by the way, a chain smoker… You could practically “carve” the smoke in the entire apartment… :downcast_face_with_sweat: He smoked Munkás (a local cigarette brand), later Symphonia. Freshly washed clothes were already stinking when they came off the drying rack. It was death; I hated it. I never smoked in the apartment. Even now, I don’t smoke this inside either, I go out to the yard.

I don’t have that … But maybe it’s for the best

I’ll never forget it, it was the ugliest thing… the filter was like a sloppily rolled-up piece of toilet paper :face_vomiting: but we still went to the early Friday morning market for that junk :sweat_smile:

And there really was one :open_mouth:

I never thought I would see this again after 36 years :face_holding_back_tears::roll_eyes::face_vomiting::rofl: It was maybe 240 forints for a carton…

As a child—because you could back then, even though there were agents, worker guards, etc.—my relatives would send me down to the tobacco shop for cigarettes in exchange for an extra Melba chocolate bar as a reward. I would always get told off if I didn’t come home with a product from the Eger Tobacco Factory. I was always in trouble because of the Sátoraljaújhely or Pécs tobacco factories. Fecske, Symphonia, and I don’t even remember the rest, but only the one from Eger was the favorite.

For me, the Pécsi Szofi was the winner.

I think it was only manufactured there, since it’s the Roman Sophie (Római szofi).

Then let it be a brown Sopianae cigarette from Pécs!
:slightly_smiling_face:

Pécs was the best, Sátoraljaújhely was the worst, efforts

And they only ever sent you for a single pack… there was no stockpiling out of fear that you wouldn’t be able to get any the next day. I could also buy 2-3 Kent cigarettes, which were very fragrant and looked oh-so-cool on the pinball machines in the arcade, and that made me feel so grown-up and enviable. Oh, and you didn’t need to call on AI anywhere to verify your age…

Only the Pécs version of Szofi, and only the Eger version of Szimfi. I had a relative who worked at the one in Sátoraljaújhely, sometimes he would show up at my dad’s place with a shopping bag full of loose cigarettes. In that form, it was king too
