Hi everyone.
I would like to present another side of flavors to you in a few sentences.
This is about NET (Naturally Extracted Tobacco) e-liquids.
NETs are e-liquids based on natural tobacco and/or fruit flavors and/or other flavorings.
These e-liquids are 100% natural and extract tobacco molecules or other elements that make up the final flavor of the e-liquid using various techniques.
There are 3 such techniques.
The best known is maceration. This involves steeping tobacco leaves in propylene glycol to obtain an aroma concentrate that carries the exact flavor of the tobacco used.
The second method is extraction. This is a well-known procedure for chemists. It’s how, for example, sunflower oil or any other vegetable oil used for cooking is produced.
Finally, the third commonly used method is distillation or hydrodistillation. This is again an extraction process we’ve seen before, but our solvent in this case is water vapor.
Tobacco varieties used, but not exclusively:
Virginia:
Virginia is by far the most well-known and widely used tobacco variety in the world. It accounts for 70% of global tobacco production. As its name suggests, it originates from the former British colony, the United States, but its cultivation has now spread throughout the world, particularly in Asia, Africa, South America, and Europe. Its leaves measure between 20 and 50 cm. They are traditionally harvested one by one once they reach maturity, then dried rapidly in hot air in large ovens, “cured by smoke,” which results in a lemon-yellow to orange color and a high sugar content.
Burley:
Burley is a light tobacco variety. It is the second most commonly grown tobacco in the world, mainly in Brazil, Mexico, some US states like Kentucky and Tennessee, and a few African countries. Grown outdoors, its leaves are comparable in size to Virginia’s, but finer and a lighter green. Burley plants are usually harvested whole before being dried outdoors in large, ventilated sheds, which is called “air-cured.”
A brown tobacco with very low sugar content but a fairly high nicotine content. It is therefore rarely used on its own but is often added to blends to give them more body.
Kentucky:
Kentucky originates from the US state of the same name, but it can also be found in the United States, Mexico, Malawi, Tanzania, Italy, Poland, and Indonesia. Its large leaves, up to 60 cm, are fire-cured, dark brown, almost black, and rich in flavor. It contains more nicotine than Burley. It is a fairly strong tobacco that lends particular strength and an original spicy and smoky taste to the tobacco blends to which it is added.
Latakia:
Although it bears the name of a small Syrian port city, Latakia is actually a blend of two very different varieties, one from Cyprus and Turkey, the other from Syria. The leaves of the Syrian variety are dark brown and have a higher nicotine content than the darker, almost black leaves of the Cypriot and Turkish varieties. Both, however, are dried over a wood fire (fire-cured).
Oriental tobaccos:
Oriental tobacco varieties are grown in the Eastern Mediterranean basin. There are many varieties, such as the famous Basma, Izmir, Katerini, and Yenidje, whose leaves are often quite small (10-15 cm), oval, and range in color from pale yellow to beige. Grown in dry conditions and then sun-dried, they develop a mild, spicy, and more or less sweet flavor.
Cavendish:
Cavendish is not really a tobacco variety but rather a method of curing, fermentation, and cutting designed to enhance the natural sweetness of tobacco. It can be produced from any tobacco variety, but it is typically made from Kentucky, Virginia, Maryland, and Burley tobaccos, or a blend of them. The tobacco leaves are piled up and then pressed until they form “cakes” a few centimeters thick. These cakes are then heated over a fire or steam to ferment the leaves. The result is a very soft and sweet tobacco, often flavored (honey, bourbon, rum, vanilla, chocolate, cherry, etc.).
Despite its many interesting aspects, it has drawbacks.
They produce a lot of gunk, so coils and cotton need frequent changing.
Long aging time: 30-90 days.
Aromas made by distillation can also be used in pod systems.
